Sadiq Khan Wins Record Third Term as Mayor of London in UK Local Elections

Sadiq Khan of the Labour Party secured a third consecutive term as mayor of London, winning over a million votes with nearly 44% of the vote, defeating Conservative Party's Susan Hall. Khan's lead showed a swing from Conservative to Labour compared to the previous mayoral election. Other Labour mayors in Liverpool, Greater Manchester, and West Yorkshire were also reelected, while Labour looks to have ousted the Conservative mayor in West Midlands. The Labour Party has recently seen success in local elections and a special parliamentary seat, indicating a potential significant defeat for the Conservatives in a general election.

The 2016 London mayoral election was held on 5 May 2016 to elect the Mayor of London, on the same day as the London Assembly election. It was the fifth election to the position of mayor, which was created in 2000 following a referendum in Greater London. The election used a supplementary vote system. The election was won by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting, Sadiq Khan, a member of the Labour Party, who polled 56.8% of the votes in the head-to-head second round of voting over the MP for Richmond Park, Zac Goldsmith, a member of the Conservative Party. Goldsmith was more than 25% ahead of the next candidate in the first round of voting, as part of a record field of twelve candidates. Of the twelve candidates only Khan, Goldsmith, and Green Party candidate Siân Berry achieved the requisite 5% minimum first round vote share to retain their deposit. This was the first election to not feature either of the two previous holders of the office, Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson, who had run against each other in 2008 and 2012. Johnson, as incumbent mayor, had chosen not to stand for re-election for a third term in office, having been elected as the Conservative Party MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip at the 2015 general election. The campaign was dominated by the personal battle between Goldsmith and Khan, and their contrasting class and ethnic backgrounds. Through his victory, Khan became the second Labour Party mayor of London after Livingstone, and the first Muslim mayor of a European Union capital city. The campaign of Goldsmith was marred by accusations of Islamophobia. Senior Muslim figures within the Conservative Party supported the accusations while the Muslim Council of Britain described Goldsmith's campaign as an example of Tory "dog whistle anti-Muslim racism" and called the party to investigate Goldsmith as part of an investigation into alleged Islamophobia in the Conservative party.

A member of the Labour Party, Khan is on the party's soft left and has been ideologically characterised as a social democrat.Born in Tooting, South London, to a British Pakistani family, Khan earned a law degree from the University of North London. He subsequently worked as a solicitor specialising in human rights issues and chaired the Liberty advocacy group for three years. Joining the Labour Party, Khan was a councillor for the London Borough of Wandsworth from 1994 to 2006 before being elected MP for Tooting at the 2005 general election. He was openly critical of several policies of Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, including the 2003 invasion of Iraq and new anti-terror legislation. Under Blair's successor Gordon Brown, Khan was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in 2008, later becoming Minister of State for Transport. A key ally of the next Labour leader, Ed Miliband, he served in Miliband's Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Minister for London.Khan was elected Mayor of London at the 2016 mayoral election, defeating the Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith, and resigned as an MP. Although Khan initially froze some Transport for London (TfL) fares, he has implemented transport fare rises since 2021 in return for a £1.6 billion bailout from the UK Government during the COVID-19 pandemic, and also lobbied the government to introduce public health restrictions on several occasions throughout the pandemic. He was re-elected as Mayor in May 2021.He was included in the 2018 Time 100 list of most influential people in the world. Khan has been praised for making London's transport more accessible and reducing the number of polluting vehicles in central London. Tories are taking to heart Trump’s playbook of division and lies

Notorious attack ad against Sadiq Khan reflects political era where social media is used to provoke outrage One of the more depressing political lessons from the Brexit campaign was that it doesnt necessarily matter if nobody believes the NHS will get an extra 350m a week, just as long as they are talking about it. And it seems to be one taken to heart by the Conservatives. The reaction of many in Westminster to the Tories swiftly notorious attack advert against the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, was initially almost baffled amusement: was this thing actually meant to be taken seriously? The curiosities were many, not just the ludicrously dramatic American voiceover, halfway between a B-movie trailer and a 1950s Batman episode, but with the UK capital painted as a modern day Gotham City, only one without a superhero, just a villain. Londoners, viewers were informed, were terrified to leave their homes, and if they did it was mainly to buy drugs. Forced out of their cars, they would stay inside or go underground, the latter presumably a reference to the generally popular and safe tube network.
