A report by Brazil's top public health institute revealed that many Yanomami Indigenous people have been contaminated with mercury from illegal gold mining in the Amazon. Hair samples from nearly 300 Yanomami individuals showed that 84% had mercury contamination levels above 2 micrograms per gram, leading to health issues. Additionally, 10% exceeded the 6 micrograms per gram threshold linked to more severe medical conditions. Fish in the area also showed high mercury levels, with consumption being a common exposure route. The contamination is a significant health concern for the Yanomami tribe.
