Markus Hinterhauser, a 66-year-old pianist born in Italy, has been granted a third five-year term as the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, making his tenure the longest since Herbert von Karajan's reign from 1956-1989. The festival's board of directors agreed to extend his contract through 2031 with a termination provision for either party on Sept. 30, 2029. Hinterhauser previously served as Salzburg's director of concerts and interim artistic director before officially taking on the role in 2016. Notable past artistic directors include Gerard Mortier, Peter Ruzicka, Jurgen Flimm, and Alexander Pereira.
