DEEP DIVE

Tropicana Las Vegas (Wikipedia)

The Tropicana Las Vegas is a casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned and operated by Bally's Corporation, on land leased from Gaming and Leisure Properties. The hotel-casino occupies 35 acres (14 ha) at the southeast corner of the Tropicana – Las Vegas Boulevard intersection. The resort was conceived by Ben Jaffe, part owner of the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. The $15 million Tropicana opened on April 4, 1957, as the most expensive Las Vegas resort developed up to that point. The Tropicana includes a 44,570 sq ft (4,141 m2) casino and 1,467 rooms. The hotel originally opened with low-rise structures containing 300 rooms, and the property would later launch several expansions, including two hotel towers added in 1979 and 1986 respectively. The latter tower was accompanied by the introduction of an island theme for the property. The Tropicana has been host to various live entertainment, including the topless showgirl revue known as Folies Bergere. It ended in 2009, after nearly 50 years, and remains the longest-running show in Las Vegas history. The Tropicana underwent numerous ownership changes throughout its history. Mob connections were present at the time of its opening, and an FBI investigation in 1979 uncovered a skimming operation at the resort. It was sold that year to Ramada Inns, which later transferred ownership to its spin-off company, Aztar Corporation, in 1989. During the 2000s, Aztar considered demolishing the Tropicana for development of a new resort, although this did not come to fruition. Columbia Sussex bought the resort in 2007, but lost it to bankruptcy two years later, with Onex Corporation emerging as the new owner. Onex launched a $180 million renovation, the property's first since 1986. The project was completed in 2011 and added a South Beach theme.Penn National Gaming bought the Tropicana in 2015, before selling it to Bally's in 2022. A year later, Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics reached an agreement with Bally's to permanently shut down and demolish the Tropicana, making way for two new projects: a baseball stadium on nine acres of the site, and a new resort bearing the Bally's name on the remaining land. The Tropicana is scheduled to close on April 2, 2024, and is expected to be demolished by the end of the year, making way for the New Las Vegas Stadium.

The New Las Vegas Stadium is a fixed roof ballpark to be built on the site of the Tropicana Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada. It is planned as the new home stadium of the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB), when the team relocates from Oakland to Las Vegas. The new stadium would mark the first time that the Athletics franchise has played in a new stadium of their own without another sports team tenant since the completion of Philadelphia's Shibe Park in 1909. It is proposed to open for the 2028 MLB season. The stadium is estimated to cost $1.5 billion, of which taxpayers would pay $380 million.

It originally opened as the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on December 4, 1973. The 26-story hotel contained 2,100 rooms and was among the world's largest hotels. On November 21, 1980, the MGM Grand was the site of one of the worst high-rise fires in United States history, in which 85 people died. The MGM Grand was rebuilt at a cost of $50 million, and eventually reopened on July 29, 1981, with new fire safety features in place. Another 26-story tower opened later that year, adding more than 700 rooms. The resort has a total of 2,812 rooms, and the casino is 68,375 sq ft (6,352.2 m2).In 1986, Bally Manufacturing purchased the resort and renamed it Bally's Las Vegas. A sister property, Paris Las Vegas, opened next to Bally's in 1999. An outdoor shopping mall, the Grand Bazaar Shops, was added to Bally's in 2015. The resort was home to the long running Jubilee! theatrical show, which ran from 1981 to 2016.Following a renovation, Caesars Entertainment rebranded the property as Horseshoe Las Vegas on December 15, 2022. It is named after the original Binion's Horseshoe casino in downtown Las Vegas. In 2023, it was announced that the resort would lose its Jubilee Tower to Paris Las Vegas, thus reducing the number of rooms at Horseshoe.

Luxor Las Vegas (Wikipedia)

Oakland Athletics relocation to Las Vegas (Wikipedia)

The Oakland Athletics relocation to Las Vegas is an ongoing effort by ownership of the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB) to relocate the franchise from Oakland, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada. The team has been based in Oakland since 1968, where it has won four World Series titles. Their relocation would make them the second major sports franchise to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, following the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) making the same move in 2020. The relocation effort follows years of failed attempts to replace Oakland Coliseum with a more modern stadium in the Bay Area. In 2023, the team announced it was planning to build a new ballpark in the Las Vegas Valley, causing negotiations over the proposed Oakland Ballpark at Howard Terminal to collapse. Initially, the team's agreement to build a new ballpark in Las Vegas started at the Wild Wild West Gambling Hall & Hotel but later shifted to the Tropicana Las Vegas with a 1,500 room hotel and casino. On June 15, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signed an MLB stadium funding bill worth $380 million, known as SB1, into law. Not long afterward, the Athletics announced they would begin the relocation process to Las Vegas when the bill was signed. By June 21, the Athletics had begun the relocation process with MLB by drafting a relocation application. The application was submitted to MLB by August 23. The move was unanimously approved by MLB ownership on November 16, 2023, during the owners meeting in Arlington, Texas. The Athletics applied to relocate to Las Vegas after their lease with the Coliseum expires at the end of the 2024 season. This will be the third city relocation in the franchise's history, as the team had previously played in Philadelphia and Kansas City prior to their move to Oakland in 1968. It will mark the first relocation of an American League team since 1972 when the Washington Senators relocated from Washington, D.C., to the Dallas–Fort Worth suburban city of Arlington, becoming the Texas Rangers, and first relocation for Major League Baseball overall since 2005 when the Montreal Expos departed from Montreal to Washington, D.C., to become the Washington Nationals. The move will be the most recent since the Oakland Raiders coincidentally relocated to Las Vegas in 2020.

Oakland Athletics Fans Stage Boycott Over Planned Move to Las Vegas

Oakland Athletics fans protested the team's planned move to Las Vegas in 2028 by boycotting the home opener, organizing a block party outside the stadium. Fan groups displayed protest merchandise, danced to live music, and called for the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to reconsider selling their stake in the Coliseum. With uncertainty over the team's future stadium location after the current season, options like Sacramento, Salt Lake City, and sharing Oracle Park with the San Francisco Giants have been mentioned.
