Nadal is the only man in history to complete the Career Grand Slam and win an Olympic gold medal in both singles and doubles.Known as the "King of Clay", Nadal won the French Open nine times in his first 10 attempts. He has won the event 14 times overall, with a match record of 112–3 (97.4% win rate), which is viewed by many analysts as one of the greatest feats in tennis and world sport. Nadal's dominance on the surface is further accentuated by his unique feat of winning the three clay-court Masters 1000 tournaments (Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome) and the French Open in the same season (2010), thus becoming the only player to complete the Clay Slam. Nadal won the French Open on his first attempt as a 19-year-old in 2005 and went on to win four consecutive crowns from 2005 to 2008, defeating then-world-No. 1 Roger Federer in three consecutive finals from 2006 to 2008 and again in the 2011 final. Nadal furthered his place in history by achieving "La Decima" — a 10th title at the 2017 French Open, where he did not drop a set and lost only 35 games (only three shy of Björn Borg's record of 32 games lost). He would then go on to win four consecutive crowns from 2017 to 2020 and another in 2022, making Nadal the only player, male or female, to win 14 titles at a single Grand Slam tournament in tennis history. Additionally, his 2020 French Open win also made Nadal the only player in history to have three streaks of four consecutive titles at a major, as well as three streaks of 30+ consecutive match wins at the same major. He has never been taken to five sets in the final of the French Open, and is the only player to achieve this level of dominance at a single major. Nadal did not lose a single semifinal on clay courts for 12 years (52–0) from the 2003 Croatia Open to the 2015 Rio Open — an all-time record on a single surface. He holds the record for the longest single surface win streak in the Open Era, having won 81 consecutive matches on clay courts from 2005 to 2007. Nadal also holds the Open Era record for the most consecutive sets won on a single surface (50 on clay). He has won two Australian Open (hard), two Wimbledon (grass), and four US Open (hard) titles. Nadal is the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open and the second to win Wimbledon. In 2008, he became only the third player in the Open Era, after Rod Laver (1969) and Björn Borg (1980), to win the French Open and Wimbledon crowns in a calendar year (Channel Slam), a feat he repeated in 2010. He is the only male player in tennis history to win the French Open and the US Open in a calendar year on four occasions (2010, 2013, 2017, 2019). Nadal won the Olympic singles gold medal in Beijing (2008) and the Olympic doubles gold medal in Rio de Janeiro (2016) on hard courts. Their first encounter in a final came at the 2007 Indian Wells Masters where Nadal won the event. Djokovic's first victory came in their third meeting against each other at the 2007 Miami Masters where he won the event.Between 2006 and 2009, this rivalry was overshadowed by Nadal's rivalry with Roger Federer. It started to become widely recognized when the pair contested their first major final at the 2010 US Open. From March 2011 to April 2013, the pair contested eleven consecutive tournament finals, with Djokovic winning eight and Nadal three, the only duo to achieve such a feat in the Open Era. It is one of two rivalries in men's tennis (the other one being the Djokovic-Murray rivalry) to involve meetings in the finals of all four majors, including four consecutive finals in 2011–12, and a record 29 Masters matches. Their French Open rivalry alone consists of ten matches, an Open Era record between two players at a single tournament. Some of their matches are considered to be classics and among the greatest matches of all time including the 2009 Madrid Masters semifinal, 2011 Miami Masters final, the 2012 Australian Open final, the 2013 French Open semifinal, 2018 Wimbledon semifinal, and the 2021 French Open semifinal. It was his second French Open title and 19th major title overall. With this victory, he became the first man to achieve the double career Grand Slam in the Open Era, and the first player in the Open Era to win a major after coming back from two sets to love down in two matches during the same major. Nadal's defeat marked only his third loss out of 108 French Open matches, including his first loss in 14 semifinal appearances at the tournament. It also marked the first time that Nadal lost a match at the French Open after taking the opening set, and the first French Open where a player defeated Nadal and went on to win the tournament. In winning this match, Djokovic became the first (and only) man ever to defeat Nadal two times at the French Open.Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev were in contention for the world No. 1 ranking; Djokovic retained the ranking after Medvedev lost in the quarterfinals.Nadal and Roger Federer were attempting to win a record 21st major title and become the outright leader in the men's singles major tally. This was the first time since 2004 that a French Open men's singles final went to five sets; on that occasion, Gastón Gaudio also came from two sets down to win the title.

Organised by the Fédération Française de Tennis (FFT), the French Open is the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year to be played. In 1968, it was the first Grand Slam tournament to open to non-amateur players. The winner of the men's singles event receives the Coupe des Mousquetaires, named after The Four Musketeers of French tennis: Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, and René Lacoste. The event was not held from 1915 to 1919 because of the First World War and was held unofficially as the Tournoi de France under German occupation from 1941 to 1944, during the Second World War.Rafael Nadal has won 14 French Open titles which is a record for any player, male or female, in any major tournament. He also holds the record for the most consecutive wins in the Open Era, with five from 2010 to 2014. Max Decugis won eight French Championships prior to the Open Era. Michael Chang became the youngest player in the Open Era to win the French Open when he took the title in 1989 at 17 years, 3 months and 20 days. It was his record-extending 14th French Open title and record-extending 22nd major title overall. It marked the first (and would be the only) time in his career that he won the Australian Open and the French Open in the same calendar year. Nadal also became the third man to defeat four top 10 players en route to a major title since the introduction of ATP rankings in 1973 (after Mats Wilander at the 1982 French Open and Roger Federer at the 2017 Australian Open). Ruud became the first Norwegian man to reach a major quarterfinal and beyond (surpassing his father Christian), and the first Scandinavian man to do so since Robin Söderling in 2010.Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Nadal. Djokovic was attempting to equal Nadal's all-time record of 21 men's singles major titles and become the first man in history to achieve the triple career Grand Slam, a feat he would achieve the following year. Their quarterfinal match was their record-extending 59th encounter, and their 10th encounter at the French Open, which is an Open Era record for two players in one tournament.Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev were in contention for the ATP No. 1 singles ranking. Following Djokovic's quarterfinal loss and Zverev's semifinal retirement, Djokovic retained the No. 1 ranking at the end of the tournament. One week later, on 13 June 2022, when points from the previous year's tournament were dropped, Medvedev reclaimed the top ranking, while Zverev reached into the new career high ranking of world No. 2, ending the Big Three's streak in the top 2 spots since 10 November 2003. Additionally, as Roger Federer did not enter the tournament, he fell outside of the top 50 in the ATP rankings for the first time since 5 June 2000.Stefanos Tsitsipas' fourth-round loss guaranteed a first-time French Open finalist from the bottom half of the draw, with Ruud emerging as that finalist. Holger Rune became the first Danish man to reach a major singles quarterfinal in the Open Era.This was the first edition of the French Open to feature a tiebreak (10-point) in the fifth set when the match reached 6 games all. Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Aslan Karatsev became the first players to contest this tiebreak in the main draw in their first-round match. This tournament marked the first time since the 2002 Australian Open that Feliciano López failed to qualify for the main draw of a major, ending his record streak of 79 consecutive major appearances. It was also the final professional tournament for former world No. 5 and 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost in the first round to Ruud.

Emma Raducanu: Former US Open champion has found her feet on clay ahead of French Open

How has Emma Raducanu found her footing on clay and can the Briton become a serious contender for the French Open at Roland Garros? Raducanu, 21, is making her way back following a torrid 2023 after undergoing multiple wrist and ankle surgeries which sidelined her for over eight months. But she looked excellent in winning her two ties in the Billie Jean King Cup victory over France and then followed that up by swatting home favourite Angelique Kerber and Linda Noskova aside in reaching the quarter-finals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart last week. She has now defeated five Grand Slam champions and an Olympic gold medallist in her career and has climbed more than 80 spots in the rankings - from No 303 to No 221 - with Madrid and Rome to come ahead of the French Open which starts on May 20. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Despite all her troubles since winning the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has never doubted the good times would return, and who would have thought that clay would be the surface that she has excelled on most since her return from those injury woes. Expectations have risen again on Raducanu's young shoulders ahead of the French Open, which has historically been a daunting place for British players over the years.

He defeated Medvedev in the final with a strong performance, ending the match with 23 winners and 73% of service points won, joining Rafael Nadal as the second male player to win five Masters 1,000 tournaments before turning 21.

Djokovic has been ranked No. 1 for a record total of 415 weeks in a record 13 different years, and finished as the year-end No. 1 a record eight times. Djokovic has won a record 24 Grand Slam men's singles titles, including a record ten Australian Open titles. Overall, he has won 98 singles titles, including a record 71 Big Titles: 24 majors, a record 40 Masters, and a record seven ATP Finals. Djokovic is the only man in tennis history to be the reigning champion of all four majors at once across three different surfaces. In singles, he is the only man to achieve a triple Career Grand Slam, and the only player to complete a career Golden Masters, a feat he has achieved twice.Djokovic began his professional career in 2003. In 2008, at age 20, he disrupted Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's streak of 11 consecutive majors by winning his first major title at the Australian Open. By 2010, Djokovic had begun to separate himself from the rest of the field and, as a result, the trio of Federer, Nadal and him was referred to as the "Big Three" among fans and commentators. In 2011, Djokovic ascended to No. 1 for the first time, winning three majors and a then-record five Masters titles while going 10–1 against Nadal and Federer. He remained the most successful player in men's tennis for the rest of the decade. In 2015, Djokovic had his most successful season, reaching a single-season record 15 consecutive finals, winning a season-record 10 Big Titles while having a record 31 victories over the top-10 players. His dominant run extended through to the 2016 French Open, where he completed his first Career Grand Slam and a non-calendar year Grand Slam, becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four majors simultaneously and setting a rankings points record of 16,950. In 2017, Djokovic suffered from an elbow injury that weakened his results until the 2018 Wimbledon Championships, where he won the title while ranked No. 21 in the world. Djokovic has continued to be a dominant force on the tour since then, winning 12 major titles and completing his second and third Career Grand Slams. Due to his opposition to COVID-19 vaccine, Djokovic was forced to skip many tournaments in 2022, notably the Australian Open and the US Open; two major events he was the favourite to win. One year after the Australian visa controversy, Djokovic made a successful comeback to reclaim the 2023 Australian Open trophy, and shortly after he claimed the French Open to take the outright record for most men's singles majors won in history.Representing Serbia, Djokovic led the national tennis team to its first Davis Cup title in 2010, and to the inaugural ATP Cup title in 2020. He also won the bronze medal for his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Djokovic is a recipient of the Order of Karađorđe's Star, Order of St. Sava, and the Order of the Republika Srpska. His other awards include being named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year four times (2012, 2015, 2016 and 2019) and the 2011 BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.Beyond competition, Djokovic was elected as the president of the ATP Player Council in 2016. He stepped down in 2020 to front a new player-only tennis association; the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) founded by him and Vasek Pospisil, citing the need for players to have more influence on the tour and advocating better prize money structure for lower ranked players. Djokovic is an active philanthropist. He is the founder of Novak Djokovic Foundation, which is committed to supporting children from disadvantaged communities. Djokovic was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2015.
