US Rep Donald Payne Jr, a New Jersey Democrat, passed away at the age of 65 after being hospitalized following a cardiac episode related to complications from diabetes. Governor Phil Murphy praised Payne for his advocacy for working families. Payne, elected in 2012 to succeed his father in the 10th Congressional District, was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and served on key committees. A special election is expected to fill his seat after his untimely death.

Donald Milford Payne (July 16, 1934 – March 6, 2012) was an American politician who was the U.S. representative for New Jersey's 10th congressional district from 1989 until his death. He was a member of the Democratic Party. The district encompassed most of the city of Newark, parts of Jersey City and Elizabeth, and some suburban communities in Essex and Union counties. He was the first African American to represent New Jersey in Congress.

Kenneth Victor Payne (born November 25, 1966) is an American college basketball coach and former player who is the former head men's basketball coach at the University of Louisville. Prior to being hired at Louisville, Payne spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) and 195 lb (88 kg) small forward, Payne played college basketball at Louisville and was a member of the 1986 NCAA championship squad. He was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 19th pick of the 1989 NBA draft.

William Payne Stewart (January 30, 1957 – October 25, 1999) was an American professional golfer who won 11 PGA Tour events, including three major championships, the last of which came just a few months before his death in an airplane accident at the age of 42.Stewart gained his first major title at the 1989 PGA Championship. Cameron Payne (born August 8, 1994) is an American professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for Murray State, and was selected 14th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2015 NBA draft. After playing two seasons for the Thunder, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2017, where he played for three seasons before being waived in 2019.After being waived, Payne played for the Cleveland Cavaliers on 10-day contracts before heading overseas to play with the Shanxi Loongs of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Payne returned to the NBA and signed with the Phoenix Suns in 2020, where he revitalized his career by becoming a key player off the bench, helping the team reach the NBA Finals in 2021. Since then, he has played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Philadelphia 76ers.
