US woman receives pig kidney transplant and mechanical heart pump

Published: 24 April 2024 at 17:15

Health

A US woman in New Jersey became the first person to receive a genetically-modified pig kidney and a mechanical heart pump, allowing her to undergo two pioneering surgeries within eight days. The surgeries, performed at NYU Langone Transplant Institute in New York, were a world first and required emergency permission from the US FDA. More than 100,000 people in the US are on the transplant waiting list, with most in need of a kidney.
