Minnesota was admitted to the Union on May 11, 1858. As of January 3, 2018, the state has had 44 people serve in the United States Senate. Its current U.S. senators are Democrats Amy Klobuchar (since 2007) and Tina Smith (since 2018), making it one of only four states to have two female U.S. senators alongside Nevada, New Hampshire and Washington. The appointment of Smith marked the first time the state had two female U.S. senators at any one time. Knute Nelson is Minnesota's longest-serving senator (1895–1923).Minnesota is one of fifteen states alongside Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, South Dakota and Utah to have a younger senior senator and an older junior senator.
14 months after being temporarily exiled, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene returns to Washington, turning her punishment into a platform for conservative influence and potentially fueling vice presidential rumors. Greene filed a motion to trigger a vote on Speaker Mike Johnson's ouster, enraged by his government funding deal with Senate Democrats and the White House. Despite disagreements, McCarthy refrains from condemning Greene's actions, in contrast to his own ouster situation.
Senate Democrats like Jon Tester, Jacky Rosen, Tammy Baldwin, Sherrod Brown, and Bob Casey facing competitive re-election races in November are expected to face pressure from Republicans as the impeachment trial for DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas begins due to concerns over the crisis at the southern border. Republicans accuse Tester of being unwilling to vote on border-related issues, leading to predictions that he and Brown will be pushed during the trial procedure. Voters in these senators' states have expressed strong concerns about the state of the border.
Top Senate Democrats, including Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Mazie Hirono, have refrained from advocating for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's retirement to secure a liberal replacement, reminiscent of the caution observed during Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's tenure. Concerns persist about the court's current right-leaning composition following the conservative appointment process after Ginsburg's passing in 2020. Sotomayor's steadfast liberal stance over 15 years contrasts with anxieties over her potential replacement's impact on civil liberties, especially amid health concerns given the possibility of a Donald Trump resurgence in 2024.
