He traveled from his Florida home to New York just days before the trial. Before setting himself on fire, Azzarello threw leaflets into the air. He had also protested with signs the day before and gave an interview critical of the American government. Officers arrived after a few minutes and extinguished the blaze before he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he died hours later.
