Law & Crime

Bryan Kohberger, accused of killing four University of Idaho students, claims he was driving south of Pullman, Washington, and west of Moscow, Idaho, the night of the slayings for hiking and stargazing. His defense intends to present a cellphone tower and radio frequency expert to support this alibi. Prosecutors and defense lawyers are under a gag order, awaiting more evidence disclosure. Idaho law requires defendants to specify alibis in writing. Kohberger's attorneys have indicated his intent to present an alibi defense in the high-profile case.

Delay in Trial for Murder of University of Idaho Students

The murder trial for Bryan Kohberger, accused of killing four University of Idaho students in November 2022, is likely to be delayed until 2025 due to legal wrangling over issues like the admissibility of evidence, change of venue, and public perception. Kohberger's defense plans to call over 400 witnesses and requested a cell tower investigation to build an alibi, potentially further delaying the trial. Prosecutors oppose providing extra time, expressing concern over the defense potentially forming an alibi based on discovery material. The victims were fatally stabbed in an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho.

The trial is expected to last 12 to 15 weeks.

The Idaho Supreme Court denied a pretrial appeal by Bryan Kohberger's lawyers to throw out the grand jury indictment in his quadruple-murder case involving the murder of four University of Idaho students in November 2022. Kohberger's legal team argued that the grand jury improperly indicted him on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. The ruling did not provide legal reasoning for the denial. The defense team also sought to delay the trial until 2025 and move the trial out of Latah County due to pretrial publicity. Kohberger faces the death penalty if convicted.

CALLAHAN: How can it take TWO YEARS to bring Bryan Kohberger to trial?

The Idaho murder suspect is making a mockery of our justice system. And the system itself is playing along. How can this be happening? Will anyone think of the families? The survivors who live in a suspended state of anguish? Fourteen months after Bryan Kohberger was arrested for the savage murders of four University of Idaho students in their off-campus home, his trial has been delayed yet again until March 2025 and, perhaps, even later. This is outrageous. Clearly Kohberger's public defender is seeking to delay by any means necessary.
