Iran is accused of raiding a ship near the Strait of Hormuz, with a video showing commandos raiding a ship by helicopter off the Emirati port city of Fujairah. The incident, attributed to Iran by a Mideast defense official, comes amid tensions between Tehran and the West. The Gulf of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz, has been a hotspot for ship seizures and attacks, including limpet mine attacks blamed on Iran. Fujairah, a key port in the region, has witnessed a series of explosions and hijackings since 2019.

US Navy commander says Iran is directly involved in ship attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels during Israel's war against Hamas

According to Vice Adm Brad Cooper, the head of the US Navy's 5th Fleet, Iran is 'very directly involved' in the ship attacks carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels during Israel's war against Hamas. While Cooper did not explicitly state that Tehran directed individual attacks, he acknowledged that attacks associated with Iran have expanded beyond the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to other parts of the Middle East. The Iranian-backed Houthis have launched at least 34 attacks on shipping since November, affecting the waterways leading to Egypt's Suez Canal.

Strait of Hormuz (Wikipedia)

The Strait of Hormuz ( Persian: تنگهٔ هُرمُز Tangeh-ye Hormoz , Arabic: مَضيق هُرمُز Maḍīq Hurmuz) is a strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. On the north coast lies Iran, and on the south coast lies the Musandam peninsula, shared by the United Arab Emirates and the Musandam Governorate, an exclave of Oman. The strait is about 90 nautical miles (167 km) long, with a width varying from about 52 nmi (96 km) to 21 nmi (39 km).A third of the world's liquefied natural gas and almost 25% of total global oil consumption passes through the strait, making it a highly important strategic location for international trade. It has been so for centuries; its vast hinterlands were rich in luxury trade goods with no easy access to lucrative trading ports. Babur's memoirs recount how almonds had to be carried from the distant Ferghana region to Hormuz to reach markets.

Iran-backed militants have launched over 160 attacks on US forces since October. Iran is also concerned about Houthi militants in Yemen attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea, as it could affect the economic interests of China and India. However, there is no indication that Iran's broader strategy of supporting proxy attacks on US and Western targets will change.
