Google announced a new version of its data center artificial intelligence chips and an Arm-based central processor, called Axion, which is set to be offered via Google Cloud. The company claims that Axion has superior performance compared to x86 chips and general-purpose Arm chips in the cloud. Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) are considered a viable alternative to Nvidia's advanced AI chips, and the new TPU v5p chip is designed to run in pods of 8,960 chips with liquid cooling, offering twice the raw performance of the prior generation TPUs.
