The operator, Pokrovsky Mine, called off the operations deeming it too dangerous to continue, citing risks of another collapse. Despite efforts by emergency workers and an investigation into safety violations, the termination of the rescue mission was deemed necessary. The mine is owned by Ural Mining And Metallurgical Company (UMMC), facing sanctions, and its managing director was recently arrested amidst the ongoing crisis.
