UK\'s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fall in 2023 Due to Higher Electricity Imports and Cost-Cutting Measures

Published: 28 March 2024 at 16:02

Environment

UK\'s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 5.4% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching a new recent low of 384.2 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent. This decrease was primarily driven by higher electricity imports, reduced electricity use in homes and businesses, and cost-cutting measures due to soaring costs. The UK has achieved a 53% reduction in emissions since 1990, surpassing other G20 economies. The sector with the largest drop in emissions was electricity supply, which decreased by 20% in 2023.
