Japanese Health Supplements Recall Leads to Deaths and Hospitalizations

Several people have died and over 100 others were hospitalized after a line of Japanese health supplements from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. caused severe health issues. The supplements, containing an ingredient called benikoji, a red mold species, were supposed to help lower cholesterol but resulted in fatalities. The company faced criticism for delaying public disclosure of the known internal problems since January, with the first announcement made on March 22.
