A United Nations report for 2022 found that 1.05 billion metric tons of food were wasted globally, with approximately one-fifth of available food being squandered by households and other sectors. This waste contrasts starkly with the fact that about a third of the world\'s population suffers from food insecurity and 783 million people experience hunger. The report emphasizes the impact of food waste on climate change and raises concerns about the distribution of food worldwide. Household waste accounted for 60% of the total, with the food service sector at 28% and retail at 12%. On average, each person wastes 79 kilograms (174 pounds) of food annually, leading to at least one billion wasted meals daily.
