Kobayashi Pharmaceuticals has reported a total of four deaths and over 100 hospitalisations due to their cholesterol-lowering supplements containing red yeast rice. The supplements have been recalled, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause, potentially related to the production process. Other products containing red yeast rice have also been recalled, sparking health concerns in Japan and other countries such as China, Taiwan, and Singapore. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has expressed the need for thorough investigations and possible safety revisions in response to the growing health scare.
