NFL Owners Approve Radical Changes to Kickoff Rule for Next Season

Published: 26 March 2024 at 14:13

American Football

NFL owners have approved a new kickoff rule for the upcoming season to increase excitement and reduce high-speed collisions, following a trend of making kickoff returns less common to lower injury rates. The rule, inspired by elements from the XFL, will be on a trial basis in 2024, with potential renewal in 2025, featuring specific setup zones for players and limited movements until the ball is touched. Kickoffs from the 35-yard line will allow for returns inside the 20 or touchbacks for possession at the 30-yard line.
