Uganda Works to Restore River Rwizi with Bamboo Planting

Published: 24 March 2024 at 05:45

Environment

In an effort to restore a 3-kilometer stretch of the river Rwizi in western Uganda, environment protection officers are replanting bamboo seedlings to create a buffer zone against activities like sand mining and farming that threaten the river\'s banks. The river has lost 60% of its water catchment area over the years, and bamboo is seen as a solution to stabilize the banks and trap surface runoff. Bamboo cultivation in Uganda is gaining interest as it serves as a sustainable source of fuel, reduces pressure on natural resources, and offers a variety of products like furniture and toothpicks.
