California authorities closed 100 miles of Interstate 80 on Friday due to the biggest snowstorm of the season hitting the Sierra Nevada. Residents were warned to take shelter as up to 10 feet of snow and winds up to 145mph were expected. The closure was caused by spin-outs, high winds, and low visibility, with no estimated time for reopening. The closure spanned from the state border near Reno, Nevada to near Emigrant Gap, California, with numerous collisions and cars getting stuck reported. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
