Niger Ends Military Cooperation Agreement with the US

Published: 17 March 2024 at 04:13

Politics

Nigers military government has terminated an agreement with the US that allowed American military personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate in Niger. The decision came after high-level talks between the two countries. This move follows deteriorating relations since the military junta took power in July 2023. The US has withdrawn many of its 1,100 troops stationed in Niger. Niger accuses the US of a condescending attitude and denounces allegations of secret deals with Russia and Iran. The US military presence in Niger is suspended, impacting approximately 648 US military personnel deployed in the country.
