NHS England stops routine prescription of puberty blockers for children

NHS England has decided to stop routinely prescribing puberty blockers to children after a review highlighted insufficient evidence of their safety and efficacy. Puberty blockers will now only be available as part of research trials. This decision comes ahead of an upcoming independent review on gender identity services in England. The Gender Identity Development Service (Gids) has seen a significant rise in referrals, prompting the call for a change in the model of care. Only a small number of young people in England are currently prescribed puberty blockers by the NHS, and they will be allowed to continue their treatment.
