An FBI informant named Alexander Smirnov has been charged with lying to FBI agents about ties between President Joe Biden, his son Hunter Biden, and the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Smirnov falsely claimed that Burisma executives paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. Prosecutors say that the alleged contacts between Smirnov and Burisma executives actually took place after Obama and Biden had left office, making it unlikely for Biden to have influenced U.S. policy. The allegations became a point of contention in Congress last summer as Republicans sought to investigate Biden and his family.
