Scientists in South Korea have developed a hybrid food consisting of beef grown inside the grains of rice. The lab-cultured food, called beef rice, is rich in nutrition and could offer a cheaper, safe, and environmentally sustainable meat alternative. The beef-rice hybrid has a firmer and more brittle texture than regular rice and contains 8% more protein and 7% more fat. The researchers hope to further improve its nutritional profile and taste. If commercialized, beef rice could be a cost-effective solution for food scarcity and potentially serve as food relief during famine or in military rations.
