Rescue teams in Japan race against time to find earthquake survivors

Published: 03 January 2024 at 10:22

Natural Disasters

Rescue teams in Japan are urgently searching for survivors after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed at least 62 people. Dozens of people are still believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings. The first 72 hours after an earthquake are critical, and the chances of survival greatly diminish after three days. The remote location of the affected areas is making it difficult to reach some communities. Heavy rainfall and cold temperatures are forecasted, leading to concerns about landslides and further damage to homes. More than 33,000 people have evacuated their homes and some areas are without access to water, electricity, or mobile phone signal.
