Kenneth Eugene Smith, the first US inmate to be executed with nitrogen gas, was revealed to be \'really struggling\' in his final hours by the prison pastor. Smith\'s request to stay his execution was rejected by the US Supreme Court hours before he was suffocated via nitrogen hypoxia. The prison pastor stated that Smith was trying to stay strong for his family but was finding it rough. Smith was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder-for-hire slaying of a preacher\'s wife in 1988.
