A Japanese man, Shinji Aoba, has been convicted and sentenced to death for the arson and killing of 36 people at the Kyoto Animation studio in 2019. Aoba set the studio ablaze by dousing the entrance area with petrol, also injuring 32 people. The attack shocked Japan and the global anime fan base. Aoba believed the studio had plagiarized his novel, an allegation that the studio denies. Anime is a major cultural export from Japan, and the incident garnered condolences from world leaders and business executives.
