First-ever execution by nitrogen gas set to take place in America, condemned as torture by the UN

Alabama is set to carry out the first-ever execution by nitrogen gas, a method deemed cruel and painful by the UN. Kenneth Smith, a convicted murderer, was initially scheduled to be executed by lethal injection but survived a botched attempt. Alabama, one of only three states to permit nitrogen executions, decided to use this method instead. While the state claims it is humane, experts argue that it could cause severe pain, leave the individual in a vegetative state, or result in choking. The American Veterinary Medical Association and the United Nations consider the method inhumane and a potential violation of human rights treaties.
