Justice Department to Seek Death Penalty for Buffalo Supermarket Shooter

Published: 12 January 2024 at 13:35

Law & Crime

The Justice Department has announced its intention to seek the death penalty for Payton Gendron, the white gunman who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket. Gendron is already serving a life sentence without parole for state charges of murder and hate-motivated domestic terrorism. Since New York does not have capital punishment, the Justice Department has the option to seek the death penalty in a separate federal hate crimes case. Gendron had agreed to plead guilty in the federal case if the death penalty was not pursued. Relatives of the victims have been informed of this decision.
