Ohio Governor Vetoes Transgender Sports Ban and Gender-Affirming Care Bill

Republican Gov Mike DeWine has vetoed a measure that would have banned transgender athletes participation in girls and womens sports, as well as gender-affirming care for minors, breaking from his party. The bill would have required separate teams for male and female sexes and explicitly banned transgender girls and women from participating in sports aligned with their gender identity. Supporters argue it maintains sports integrity and fairness. At least 20 states have passed similar bans, but a regulation proposed by President Joe Bidens administration is set to finalize early next year, potentially upending existing bans.
