GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley declined to say slavery was a cause of the Civil War and instead argued that it came down to the role of government. Haley stated that the cause of the Civil War was essentially how government was going to run the freedoms and what people could and couldnt do. She emphasized the importance of government securing the rights and freedoms of the people, and stated that it was never meant to be all things to all people.
