Former TV journalist barred from standing in Russian presidential election

Published: 23 December 2023 at 13:09

Politics

Yekaterina Duntsova, a former TV journalist who planned to challenge President Putin in Russias upcoming presidential election, has been rejected as a candidate by the electoral commission. The commission cited 100 mistakes on her application form as the reason for the rejection. Duntsova has vowed to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court. The move is seen by some as evidence that dissent will not be tolerated in the election campaign. The presidential election, scheduled for March 2024, will be Russias first since Putins invasion of Ukraine. So far, 29 people have filed to run for the presidency.
