EU Court Rules FIFA and UEFA Acted Illegally in Blocking European Super League
Soccer
The European Unions top court has ruled that FIFA and UEFA acted illegally in blocking the creation of the European Super League (ESL). The court stated that both bodies were abusing their dominant position in football, but clarified that its ruling does not mean the Super League must necessarily be approved. The proposed league, which involved 12 of Europes biggest clubs, collapsed shortly after its announcement due to backlash from rivals, fans, and politicians. The court deemed the FIFA and UEFA rules on prior approval of interclub football competitions as contrary to EU law and competition law.
